The preservation of 2400 acres in a natural state ensures that many plants and animals can thrive here bringing to the next generations the thrill of undisturbed nature. Today as ever, Hirundo is your nearby refuge to walk in silent contemplation of the forest along miles of trails, paddle a canoe on Pushaw Stream, or join an environmental education program. To maintain this “gem” of a community resource, in the words of the Bangor Daily News (4/12/12), we need your help.
Our mission depends on public support.
Financing an operation like Hirundo is not easy. We get no government or University support. Rather than charge fees, we ask for donations for programs, activities and canoe use so that everyone can participate. School budgets are tight and the science programs offered by Hirundo extend the capacity of local schools to implement the new National Science Standards. Our staff naturalist is in constant demand for programs, and our caretaker keeps miles and miles of trails open year round, as well as maintaining the buildings, canoes and equipment.
Your support will make it possible to:
- Maintain quality programming for you, and for the school children, our future decision makers
- Expand and maintain trails and interpretive walks
- Replace aging canoe equipment for public use
- Purchase scientific equipment for monitoring water quality and environmental vibrancy
